Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has welcomed a new agreement ensuring the rights of UK residents to access emergency and medically necessary care when travelling in the EU will continue.
UK residents will now be able to apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).
The new cards will gradually replace the existing European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) and will mean that any traveller will be able to access medical help they need.
Current EHIC cards remain valid as long as they are in date and people can continue to use these while travelling to the EU for holiday, study or business.
The public need only apply for the new GHIC when their current EHIC expires.
Scottish Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan David Duguid said
This is good news for people across Banff and Buchan and should provide peace of mind when travelling abroad on holiday or on business.
The deal struck between the UK and the EU ensures the right for our citizens to access necessary healthcare will continue.
It is an important element of the UK’s future relationship with the EU and for the public, means very little will change.
Like the EHIC card it replaces, the new GHIC card is free to obtain through the official GHIC website.
