Many retail outlets are reopening this week as Scotland proceeds cautiously through the phases of the Scottish Government route map to coming out of lockdown. And the Scottish Government has urged people to wear face coverings in enclosed spaces – such as shops – to help continue the suppression of Covid-19.

Wearing face coverings is already required on public transport, and the First Minister – Nicola Sturgeon MSP – asks people at her daily briefings to wear them in other enclosed spaces.

Some MSPs have worn coverings representing their football teams. Others still are using face coverings to promote good causes. The First Minister wore a tartan face covering, 20% of the proceeds of the sale of which goes to Shelter Scotland.

Ms Martin has encouraged people for months on social media to wear face coverings, and now has enlisted the help of her SNP MSP colleagues to urge more people to use them more often.

The Aberdeenshire East MSP asked her colleagues to provide pictures of themselves wearing face coverings, and collages of the pictures have been shared widely on social media receiving an overwhelmingly positive response.

Commenting, Gillian Martin MSP for Aberdeenshire East said

I have long advocated the wearing of face coverings. It does not only help protect the wearing, but significantly reduces the chance the wearer may unknowingly spread covid-19. I’m delighted my SNP colleagues are leading by example on this.

We know that you can be asymptomatic – feeling fine – and yet be contagious. Wearing a face covering when you are near other people, especially indoors, is one way to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

As well as washing our hands regularly, and keeping physically distanced, if we all take this simple step of wearing a face covering we can help keep this virus under control – and make it less likely the Scottish Government will have to re-impose stricter lockdown restrictions.

For both public health and economic reasons we can’t afford a second wave of covid-19 to crash over Scotland. When something so simple as wearing a face covering can make such difference, it’s a no brainer to do so.

Can you name all the MSPs with their face coverings on?
