Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has been promoted to a junior ministerial role in the UK Government.
The Scottish Conservative MP will take up the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Scotland Office.
He will work under Secretary of State for Scotland Allister Jack and alongside Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes, who was also appointed today.
Mr Duguid was first elected as MP for Banff and Buchan in 2017 and again in 2019. He has been serving as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) with the Department for International Trade.
Commenting on the appointment, Mr Duguid said
I feel very honoured to join the team at the Scotland Office under the Secretary of State Allister Jack.
There are huge challenges facing Scotland right now, with the efforts of both our governments rightly focused on dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
But there are also enormous opportunities ahead. After delivering on Brexit, the UK Government is engaged in trade negotiations with the EU, the United States and other major economies around the world.
I will do my utmost to promote the interests of Scotland and our key industries including the vital farming, fishing and energy sectors.
I am very much looking forward to getting started in the new role.
My focus will be very much on Scotland’s economy as we get things moving after the coronavirus pandemic. As part of that, I will continue to champion our transformative investment of more than £1.4 billion in Scottish city and growth deals, as we extend their cover to the whole of Scotland.
Looking ahead, we will ensure that our new relationship with the EU works for Scotland, bringing new opportunities for many of our vital industries, including Scotland’s farmers. We will ensure that Scotland’s fishing industry has a bright future as we leave the unfair common fisheries policy and become, once again, an independent coastal state.
This role of Under-Secretary is an unpaid junior role in the department, but Mr Duguid will act as a whip.
