Design the embankment competition with Friends of Turriff Cemetery

The Friends of Turriff Cemetery (FoTC) in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council would like to invite you all to take part in their Design the Embankment Competition.

The embankment area of the cemetery needs to be cleared and replanted to make it a nicer more inviting space.

The competition area which can be seen in the photo above has been split in to four sections.

FoTC would like you to design and plan with shrubs and plants that are sustainable and mostly low maintenance. Where possible they would like to see colour and vibrance to enhance the appearance of the embankment areas.

Friends of Turriff Cemetery Chairman, Fraser Watson said

Friends of Turriff Cemetery aims in this competition are to personalise the embankment to the Community of Turriff , so that hopefully as the years go by, the community will take an interest in caring for it in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council.

I’m please to say that all the community are getting behind the Friends of Turriff Cemetery. Without the support of local businesses like, Celebrations, Travis Perkins, HIS & White Lodge who have donated tools to us, the community wouldn’t be able to do the work they are.

I also have to say a big thank you to Angus Homes who helped us out with the ground plan for the competition area.

The friends group would like families to get together, young and old, to create something that will last and can be cared for and looked after by the Community along with Aberdeenshire Council .

Four families can each win a section, all families who enter will be invited to plant the plants in all the sections, the idea being that the youngest generation will plant the plants that will grow there with the help of older generations and the Friends Group.

The idea is to personalise the embankment at the cemetery for the Community to have more involvement in caring for it .

The competition will be judged by Aberdeenshire Council Landscape Services who will provide all the plants required for the winning designs to be planted.

The competition starts today and closes on January 28, with the winners being announced at the start of February.
