Morrison Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the replacement Markethill Primary School in Turriff.
Plans for the new school were initially passed in 2011, but a small parcel of land which was key to the new development wasn’t owned by Aberdeenshire Council. The council negotiated with the land owner but could not come to a satisfactory agreement. In 2013 Aberdeenshire Council agreed that they would seek a compulsory purchase order for the land. A deal to purchase the land was finally agreed in June 2015.
The new school will provide space for up to 505 primary pupils. A larger nursery facility will be provided on site, increasing the quality and availability of pre-school provision for parents.
The new school will include
- 18 classrooms
- two general purpose rooms
- additional needs provision
- gym with two courts and changing rooms
- dining hall
- staff areas
A public consultation on the new school was carried out between March and May 2015.
Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine Area Committee approved Morrison Construction as the main contractor for the £12million project at their meeting on November 17.
Formartine Area Committee Chair Councillor Rob Merson said
Huge investment has taken place in recent years across the authority to improve buildings and facilities in Aberdeenshire. I welcome the approval of the main contractor for this project and look forward to seeing it progress as will residents in Turriff and the surrounding area serving the school community.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee Councillor Alison Evison said
The new primary school will increase the capacity and improve on the existing facilities in Turriff and is a key part of the council’s school estate capital plan.
I am sure parents will welcome the news that a contractor has been appointed and work can now progress on facilities in which young people can flourish and which the wider community can enjoy too.
Work to replace the existing school is expected to commence in February 2016 and the new Markethill Primary School is expected to be complete by August 2017.
Regional Director of Morrison Construction Mike Bruce said
We are delighted to have secured the construction of Markethill Primary School for Aberdeenshire Council, the people of Turriff and the surrounding area.
Many of our staff have a strong personal interest in the project having grown up in the area. In fact, George Morrison, who heads up the team, has lived in Turriff for 43 years and three generations of his family have been educated at the existing school.
