Police Scotland are warning residents to be on the look out for the ‘Housebreakers Code’ marked on or around properties.
The code is reported to provide information about the property, the occupants and security.
Posting on the Police Scotland Facebook page they say
You may have seen on our regional accounts about a secret “housebreakers code” which has been used to target properties in certain parts of the country.
The characters drawn on houses and sheds by criminals can indicate whether a property is alarmed, has vulnerable occupants or has been robbed before.
Here is a graphic of the types of markings you may see.
I’ve not seen any reports of these codes being seen in or around Turriff but if you see any marking similar to the ones shown on your own property or that of a neighbour, you should contact Police Scotland on 101.
Please share this information and keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours and relatives.
