The Chairman of Turriff & District Community Council, Ben Ewen handed out prizes to the winners of the 2014 Turriff & District Garden Competition at the Turriff Town House( Former Municipal Building) on Monday 18th August.
There were a number of trophies, cups and shields to be collected and Leslie and Janice Beedie of L& J Beedies of Balmellie Street, once again generously sponsored all of the prizes which went with the silverware. The Judge, Charlie Laing handed the Community Council Cup for the overall best garden to Jim Massie of Johnston Park.
Harry Emslie, who initially provided the Toll House Shield, once again generously gave the Community Council funds to give an additional prize to the best gardener who is over 80. This, by virtue of his placing in the best garden category, was again Jim Massie. John Mackie of Bracken’s Place kindly stood in for Jim Massie and collected his trophies.
In the event, the weather on the evening was quite awful, and several of the winners could not make it to the presentation. Those who did had a pleasant evening, and were joined by many of the helpers who have assisted in the preparation of the hanging baskets and flower tubs around the town. Sandwiches and goodies were laid on by members of Turriff Town Pride Group who with the Community Council have arranged and worked on the Garden Competition for the past few years.
Community Council Treasurer, John Smith, in calling for a vote of thanks congratulated all the winners, and of course Leslie and Janice, and hoped that all those taking part this year would participate next year, and in particular hoped that there would be some young competitors, for he noted, that there have been no entries for the past two years.
