Turriff Town Pride

published on 22nd May 2014 by Mike Rawlins Categories: Turriff News #Tagged: Aberdeenshire Council

Turriff Town Pride group is in process of preparing for the return of flowers, baskets and tubs which will beautify the town centre and entrances in Turriff during the summer months of 2014.

This Friday, 23 May, plants will be collected from White Lodge Nursery, married to planters together with compost and will be passed to a whole team of volunteers who will look after and nurture them until they are hung on lamp posts at the Square and at the Mercat Cross during the week of 2 June.

This year there will be 38 baskets, 2 to a lamppost, with an extra two just outside the Library prepared by the Gardening Club

White Lodge Nursery are also supplying a further 35 baskets which will be hung at shop frontages along High Street and Main Street. These will add to the baskets that many of the local traders such as Celebrations, Stewart & Watson, Scotch Corner and others will be displaying.

Along side the hanging baskets Turriff Town Pride will be planting out the tubs, troughs and other containers at various locations around the town. At the last count there were more than one hundred of these.  It is hoped that they will set out again in the first week of June. The plants for these are provided by Aberdeenshire Council from their nursery at Aden Park and they will be collected from Ellon by the volunteers.

Once the baskets are planted out around the town, they are looked after and watered during the summer months by the volunteers with the help of Geronimo the Turriff Town Pride watering cart.

John Smith of the group told My Turriff

We are intending to enter the Formartine-in-Bloom event which is run in August. As one of the Large Towns in Formartine we have never progressed higher than Highly Commended in the seven years of entering. We can only hope.

John continued

In all there are more than 200 baskets and tubs to be erected or refreshed. It is a big job. If there are any people in Turriff who would be prepared to help, we would be very grateful if they could contact us.

Volunteers can contact John Smith or any of the Turriff Town Pride group directly or you can contact us here at My Turriff and we will pass your details on.
